What Is Online Fraud?
- Online fraud refers to fraudulent activities such as identity theft and financial fraud that are committed by using the internet.
- Online fraud includes online scams, spam, identity theft, credit card fraud, cyber vandalism, cyberstalking, a scammer buying products online from your account without your knowledge, identity spoofing, scam pop-up alerts, chain letter scams, etc.
Common types of online fraud
- Assured approval for a credit card or loan: email scams that tell you to pay an upfront fee and that assure to give you a loan or credit card.
- Employment opportunities: they promise to give you an employment offer letter if you agree to pay a certain fee.
- Lottery scams: the email will say that you have won a lottery and you have to pay a processing fee.
- Phishing: the meaning of phishing is to get your access to confidential details like date of birth, credit card number, passwords, etc. through email, SMS, or calls.
- Free vacation: you may get an email that says that you have received a free vacation to an exotic location with a hotel room booking. you will then be asked to make a payment later.
How To Register The Complain?
- The first thing the victim must do is register a written complaint with any cell across India . The I.T Act declares cybercrime a part of global jurisdiction so one can approach any cyber cell. One can file a cyber crime complaint online at http://cybercrime.gov.in/ or offline .you can also dial the dedicated cybercrime complaint number announced by the ministry of home affairs at 155260 on a working day from 9:00a.m to 6:00 p.m.
- The cybercrime application letter needs to be addressed to the head of the cybercrime cell and must clearly state details such as name, email I.D, address, and phone number.
- Depending on the nature of the cybercrime, certain documents are required to file the complaint. This requirement varies based on the crime and acts as substantiating proof to support a case.
- If your city does not have a cyber cell, then you can register an FIR at their local police station. If they do not accept the complaint, the commissioner or the Judicial Magistrate of the city must be approached.
Steps To File Complain Online
- Go to the webpage – https://cybercrime.gov.in/ and click the ‘file complaint’ button.
- After the terms and conditions on the next page are accepted, proceed to the ‘Report other cybercrime ’button.
- Select the ‘citizen login’ option and enter the important details.
- Enter the OTP, fill in the captcha and click submit button.
- On the next page, enter details in the form. This section is divided into four parts, preview the information filled in and then submit it.
- You will then be directed to an incident details page. Mention the details and supporting evidence of the crime. Then click on ‘Save and Next.
- The next page requires information about the alleged suspect if any.
- Once you have filled in all details, verify it and click submit.
