About the Online Internship Opportunity

WILPF or Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom is looking for motivated individuals to be a part of their online Human Rights Program Internship.

The WILPF

The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) is a non-profit non-governmental organization working “to bring together women of different political views and philosophical and religious backgrounds determined to study and make known the causes of war and work for a permanent peace” and to unite women worldwide who oppose oppression and exploitation. WILPF has national sections in 37 countries.

The WILPF is headquartered in Geneva and maintains a United Nations office in New York City.

The Internship

WILPF is looking for motivated individuals interested in working on gender, human rights, peace and security issues.

Central Areas:

• A network of feminist peace activists
• How civil society interacts with the UN human rights system during the COVID-19 pandemic

Your Tasks

• Supporting the Programme by following online meetings of UN human rights mechanisms and reporting on those
• Helping to draft submissions or statements to UN human rights mechanisms
• Analysing recommendations made by human rights mechanisms
• Helping to organise remote training for our members and partners
• Helping to prepare training materials, working documents and other materials on human rights for advocacy and for internal use
• Contributing to the Programme’s Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning
• Some interaction and coordination with WILPF National Sections and Groups.

Who can Apply

Interested in human rights, gender justice and women’s rights and peace issues in particular.

This internship will give you an opportunity to use in a practical way knowledge of human rights that you have acquired either in the classroom or through activism.

Other Important Details

• The internship will be home-based and will start in early February 2021 to last for six months.
• Some 30% of the time will be dedicated to administrative support.
• Interns are paid a monthly gross stipend of 900 CHF when based in Geneva. As this internship will be home-based, the stipend might be adapted depending on the candidate’s location.

Requirements

• Knowledge of human rights, gender studies or international relations, gained through academic studies, activism or other relevant experience
• Demonstrated human rights activism
• Keen interest in WILPF’s mission and values
• Strong writing, research and analytical skills and rigorous attention to detail
• Ability to work autonomously as part of a team working remotely
• Fluency in English is a requirement
• Fluency in French or Spanish is also mandatory
• Knowledge of both Spanish and French is an asset
• Ability to use Microsoft Office software suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
• Knowledge of issues around Women, Peace and Security is an asset
• Knowledge of international and regional human rights legal frameworks is an asset
• Experience with Database Management (Airtable), Task Management (Trello, Slack), Graphic Design tools (e.g. Adobe InDesign) is an asset

Please Note: This is an internship position. It is intended to be for applicants looking to gain work experience and practical knowledge of human rights advocacy. It is particularly suitable for recent graduates in Law, Human Rights, International Relations, Gender Studies, or a related field, or for students currently enrolled in a degree program in one of those fields. Overqualified applicants will not be considered.
